Growing
Interest Amid Challenges
Electric
cars are still a relatively new concept in Uganda, but there is growing
interest in them due to several factors, including rising fuel costs, concerns
about air pollution, and government incentives.
Availability
Electric
cars are not yet widespread in Uganda, with most available options being used
imported cars. The recent re-introduction of import duty has made new electric
vehicles more expensive. However, you can find some new models from brands like
Volkswagen and BMW, though the selection is limited compared to developed
countries. A notable local option is the "Kiira EV Smack", the first electric
hybrid vehicle designed and built in Africa by Kiira Motors Corporation. This
5-seater front-wheel drive sedan combines electric and gasoline power,
addressing range anxiety concerns.

Cost
Electric
cars are generally more expensive than gasoline-powered cars in Uganda due to
their limited availability and import duties. Used electric cars can be found
for around Ush 35 million (approximately $10,000), while new models can cost
upwards of Ush 100 million (around $28,000).
Charging
Infrastructure
The charging
infrastructure for electric cars in Uganda is still in its early stages. There
are only a handful of charging stations, primarily located in Kampala, the
capital city. Most of these stations are situated at hotels, shopping malls,
and other commercial properties.
Government
Incentives
The Ugandan
government had previously offered tax breaks on electric cars, but this was
recently reversed. While the government is considering ways to promote the
adoption of electric cars, there are currently no significant incentives in
place.
Overall, the
electric car market in Uganda is still in its early stages of development.
However, there is growing interest in electric cars, and the government is
starting to consider ways to promote their adoption.
